The Kiwanis Law Enforcement Career Camp is a joint venture between the McMinnville Kiwanis Club and Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office for high school juniors and seniors interested in law enforcement professions.
Twenty-five participants will be selected to participate in this year’s Law Enforcement Career Camp. Each participant must complete an application; be recommended by his or her principal, two teachers, and a law enforcement representative; pass a background check; and be interviewed by a selection committee made of law enforcement officials and McMinnville Kiwanis Club members.
During camp participants will be introduced to a variety of law enforcement methods and techniques by active law enforcement officers and instructors. They will discover new areas of interest, learn basic enforcement and self-defense skills and develop a deeper understanding of what it means to serve their communities as a law enforcement professional. Approximately 80% of Law Enforcement Career Camp graduates go on to pursue law enforcement careers.
TUITION
$500 which includes meals, lodging, classes and transportation needed during the week. Participants will also receive a camp hat and T-shirt.
KIWANIS SCHOLARSHIPS
Many Oregon Kiwanis Clubs offer scholarships to camp participants. For scholarship inquiries, please contact your local Kiwanis Club.
IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING A LAW ENFORCEMENT CAREER…
FROM DEPUTY ROY E. HARRELL, JR., YAMHILL COUNTY S.O., CADET ADVISOR
In my 14 plus years of working with youth as a Cadet Unit advisor for the Yamhill Co. Sheriff’s Office I have had several young men and women cadets (including one of my own daughters) attend the Kiwanis Law Enforcement Camp. All that have attended have had fun, learned a lot about law enforcement, and returned with a wealth of knowledge. They learned leadership, investigation tools, and many aspects of law enforcement. The Kiwanis Law Enforcement Camp is the best camp of its kind.
FROM SERGEANT TIM SVENSON
The Law Enforcement field is very competitive. Sometimes, hundreds of people apply for only 1 open position. As an employer, we are always looking for those candidates who have that special edge; someone who has done a little more preparation for the job. Anyone who has attended the Kiwanis Law Enforcement career camp will learn the skill sets needed for a career in Law Enforcement. They will be one step ahead of all other applicants. I would encourage any high school student who may be interested in becoming a Law Enforcement officer, to attend this camp.
